City Butt, Country Butt

10/29/2005

You've heard Aesop's classic tale of the City Mouse and the Country Mouse, right? Well, this is about the City Butt and the Country Butt.

I was in my car, station surfing on XM Radio, when I came across not one but two new lame-o songs about women's derrieres. (Although, derriere is a little too classy a word to describe what I heard. Can you say, ob-ject-i-fi-ca-tion?)

First, the Country Butt. Or, I should say, badonkadonk.

This little gem, sung by country superstar Trace Adkins, is called "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk."

It's so hard not to stare
At that honky tonk badonkadonk
Keepin' perfect rhythm
Make ya wanna swing along
Got it goin' on
Like Donkey Kong
And whoo-wee
Shut my mouth, slap your grandma
There outta be a law
Get the Sheriff on the phone
Lord have mercy, how's she even get them britches on
That honky tonk badonkadonk

The only thing that impressed me about this song is that the writers managed to work in the classic video game, "Donkey Kong."

The City Butt song I heard was "My Humps" by the equally superstarry hip-hop group, The Black Eyed Peas. I'd rather not post those lyrics because they're just stupid/gross. But if you want to hear them, the video premiered on MTV this month and is in heavy rotation for the pleasure of 13-year-old boys everywhere. Consequently, the song is the number-one download on iTunes today. Basically, Fergie sings the lyric "my humps" a cajillion times along with “lady lumps.” And then there's something about milk and Coco Puffs. (I bet the folks at General Mills are giddy over their free product placement.)

Clearly, neither of these songs will make a lasting impact on pop culture. “Kiss my badonkadonk” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but it sounds better than “kiss my hump,” if you ask me.

I've started listening to classical just to be avoiding lyrics altogether. :-)

Very funny and well written. Your post inspired my post for today. I had a good laugh over it. At one point in college I wrote a linguistics paper where I phonetically transcribed several Hip-Hop and Country songs and then compared their pronunciation and the way they talked about the same topics. I would have LOVED to use these examples to prove my case.....which was basically nothing. But it was a really fun 10 pages to write.

My daughter loves that song and I can't understand a word of it except for the hump part. Just when I start to panic, I remember being 13 and singing...no SHOUTING...the words to "Feel Like Makin' Love." I'm certain I had no clue what it meant. I think the same is true today.

I agree 100%. These songs don't add all that much to the music spectrum. I love your blog and a very good post.
