This and This

12/04/2008

Hey, looks like it's time for my monthly (?!) post! I would love to know what you're buying, eating, watching, doing, etc. Here are a few of my favorite things as of late:

This quote:

"It's the year after the baby comes that is like someone hitting you every day in the face with a hammer."
Tina Fey, current issue of Vanity Fair

This funny lady:

Nan Graham, a Southern humorist, spoke at a charity event I recently attended. She was hilarious. I'm reading her book, "In a Magnolia Minute: Secrets of a Late Bloomer."

This gripping TV show:

Whale Wars airs Fridays at 9 pm on Animal Planet. Apparently, actress Daryl Hannah is joining the cast. I think the last thing this reality show needs is a celebrity, but we'll see.

This exchange with Bugaboo:

Him: Who's this guy on my Hot Wheels car, Mom?
Me: What do you mean? It's Ronald McDonald. He's a clown.
Him: He's really a clown?
Me: Well, yeah.
Him: I thought he was just a regular guy.
Me: You know some other people who look like that?

This decadent holiday recipe:

Paula Deen's Sweet Potato Bake
3 cups cooked, peeled and mashed sweet potatoes
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup melted butter
2 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ginger
1/4 cup heavy cream or half and half

Topping:
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup walnuts or pecans (Surcie suggests pecans!)
1/3 cup all purpose flour
3 T. melted butter

Mix all ingredients for bake, except the cream. Beat at medium speed. Then add cream and mix well. Pour into a 2 quart greased dish. For the topping, mix all ingredients together and sprinkle over top of casserole. Bake for 25-30 minutes in a 325 degree oven.

This natural congestion reliever for children:

Sr-pedi-kit
NeilMed's Sinus Rinse Pediatric Kit
Last year, Bugaboo seemed to have a sinus infection from September to June, including four ear infections. This year, at the first sign of congestion or runny nose, he uses this. It's easy, and it works! (They also make one for adults, but I prefer their Neti Pot and use it daily.)

This delicious (no kidding!) goat's milk beverage:

Kefir_faq_1

Redwood Hill Farm's Blueberry Pomegranate Goat Milk Kefir
Be ye not afraid. It's like drinkable yogurt, only better for you. (And I think it's tastier!)

Cheryl Says:

Oh dear Surcie, our Sarah had a pronounced Ronald McDonald fetish...to the point that for her 4th birthday she wanted (and had) him on her birthday cake.

Have you tried Paula Deen's Krispy Kreme bread pudding? Ambrosia...maybe I'll wash it down with some healthful Kefirs next time...

It amazes me how many Southern people don't know what the word surcie means! I use the word all of the time.

I better get some of that goat milk since I'm so hot on yogurt, huh? Boy I love the way you and the Internet teach me stuff.
